Citrus Fruit: Origin & History
Citrus Fruit are said to be native to India and then to have spread prehistorically, through cultivation, to the Near East and China. By 1000 AC it was known and cultivated in Europe and the Mediterranean. Sinensis Orange or Sweet Orange, a hybrid between pummelo and mandarin (different parents and later than sour orange), is native to India, some other orange species of orange and mandarin or tangerine in China and the sour types of citrus fruits in Malaysia. Following the Christian Era, the term "citron", which characterizes the identity of the species, derived from the wrong pronunciation of the Greek word "cedar". As far as the compound word esperidoeidi (=citrus Fruit) is concerned, the first part of it derives from the Greek word "hesperides" and the second from the word "eidos" (=species)...
