The Culture of the Olive

"If you pull Greece apart, all you will be left with in the end is an olive, a vineyardand a boat. Which means that you can re-create Greece using the same things" said Nobel Prize-winning poet Odysseas Elytis, referring to the main elements which make up the Greek identity. The olive is the tree, which for thousands of years has connected the past with the present and the future,Ancient Greece with Byzantine and Modern Greece.

Nothing is as closely associated with Greek history as the olive tree, the nourisher of children according to Sophocles, and which is a key element of both the Greek natural world and of Greek history, just as olive oil is the main staple of the Greek diet. The olive has beena symbol of peace and victory as well as a symbol of eternity and fertility.

THRACE: The undiscovered area

In the mind of Greeks it always symbolizes a border. Thrace is found at the extreme, north-eastern point of Greece, and has undergone many border changes over the course of the twentieth century. This is a land of many civilizations, where Greek Orthodox,Muslims and Pomachs live together in villages strewn with church bells and minarets, where the people tend to their celebrated tobacco fields, where the rapid waters of the Nestos, Kosinthos and Evros rivers on their eternal journeys can be heard. This is a corner of Greece where the sun warms the marble at Maroneia and Mesimvria and where the people live in the hope of a better tomorrow.
